Picnics, puppets, and parades! Oh my! The Secret Mountain was overjoyed to co-host Kids POP this year in celebration of the release of the musical tale A Picnic in the Sun by Christiane Duchesne, Jérôme Minière, and illustrated by Marianne Ferrer. The fanfare-filled day began with a paper bag puppet workshop at Saint Viateur Park where kids of all ages created characters to join Bertie and gang! With puppets prepared and miniature flags waving, the crowd was joined by a six-member marching band—complete with trumpets and tubas. After a couple of tunes, everyone hit the road for a parade down Bernard Avenue en route to Theatre Rialto. Finally, guests arrived for the main event: A children’s concert with performances by Clerel, Geneviéve Toupin, Jérôme Minière, and José Major! The band played for a lively crowd that clapped, danced, and even crept onto the stage on occasion! After the show, attendees could purchase books from the fine folks from La Petite Drawn & Quarterly, and submit their puppets for a chance to win a toy version created by Raplapla. Couldn’t make it? Don’t fret! You can watch the full concert online, and find photos from the day on Instagram and Facebook. A Picnic in the Sun is available online and at local bookstores, including La Petite Drawn & Quarterly. In addition to the illustrated story, the hardcover picture book includes a CD and digital album with the narrated story and 18 songs. Find it on Edelweiss, CataList, and Goodreads. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped out! All proceeds of the show were donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Montreal. We’d also like to acknowledge the financial support of FACTOR, the Government of Canada, Canada’s private radio broadcasters, Canada Council for the Arts, and le Conseil des arts de Montréal.
